 Description:
Cefadroxil, known as Neucef DS Syrup is a semisynthetic antibiotic.
belonging to the first generation of cephalosporins. It has potent
antibacterial properties, making it effective against a wide range of bacterial
infections. Cefadroxil is chemically designated as 5thia1azabicyclo [4.2.0] oct2ene2carboxylic
acid, 7[amino (4hydroxyphenyl) acetylamino]3methyl8oxo, monohydrate
 Mode of Action:
Cefadroxil is bactericidal and acts by inhibiting the
synthesis of the bacterial cell wall. It binds to and inactivates
transpeptidase, a penicillinbinding protein on the inner surface of the
bacterial cell membrane. This action prevents the crosslinking of
peptidoglycan, an essential component of the bacterial cell wall, making the
bacteria susceptible to destruction
 Pharmacokinetic Profile:
Neucef DS Syrup is rapidly absorbed after oral administration, with
peak serum concentrations reached within hours. The drug is primarily excreted
unchanged in the urine within 24 hours
 Indications:
Cefadroxil is indicated for the treatment of mild to
moderate infections of the:
- Â Respiratory tract
(e.g., pharyngitis and tonsillitis) - Â Urinary tract
- Â Skin and skin
structure infections - It can also serve as an alternative to penicillin in
patients with a history of hypersensitivity reactions
 Contraindications:
Neucef DS Syrup is contraindicated in patients with known
allergies to cephalosporin antibiotics. It should not be given to patients who
have experienced asthma, urticaria, or allergictype reactions after taking
aspirin or other NSAIDs.
 Side Effects:
Common side effects include gastrointestinal disturbances (diarrhea) and skin rashes. Nausea and
vomiting may also occur. Rare side effects include genital pruritus, genital
moniliasis, vaginitis, anaphylaxis, erythema multiforme, toxic epidermal
necrolysis, fever, abdominal pain, superinfection, renal dysfunction, hepatic
dysfunction, anemia, and hemorrhage. Some cephalosporins have been associated
with triggering seizures, particularly in patients with renal impairment
 Warnings:
Before starting therapy, healthcare providers should check
for hypersensitivity reactions to cefadroxil, cephalosporins, and penicillin.
If an allergic reaction occurs, discontinuation of the drug is necessary
 Precautions:
In patients with known or suspected renal impairment,
clinical observation and appropriate laboratory studies should be conducted
before and during therapy. Prolonged use of cefadroxil may result in the
overgrowth of non susceptible organisms, requiring careful patient observation.
If superinfection occurs during therapy, appropriate measures should be taken
