Onvate (Fluticasone Propionate) Lotion/Cream: A Comprehensive Guide to Dermatological Relief

Introduction:

Onvate, featuring Fluticasone Propionate, is a versatile solution available in both lotion and cream forms, designed to alleviate inflammatory and pruritic manifestations associated with atopic dermatitis. This comprehensive guide covers the composition, indications, dosage, contraindications, precautions, and more to ensure safe and effective use.

Composition:

  • Onvate Lotion: Each milliliter contains 0.5 mg of Fluticasone Propionate BP.
  • Onvate Cream: Each gram contains 0.5 mg of Fluticasone Propionate.

Indications:

Onvate Lotion/Cream specifically formulates to relieve inflammatory and pruritic manifestations of atopic dermatitis in patients 1 year of age or older. Note that the safety and efficacy of using Onvate for longer than 4 weeks in this population have not been established. Additionally, its safety and efficacy in pediatric patients below 1 year of age remain undetermined.

Dosage and Administration:

For conditions such as Rosacea and Atopic Dermatitis, apply a thin film of Onvate Lotion/Cream to the affected skin areas once daily, rubbing in gently.

Contraindications:

Onvate is contraindicated in the following cases:

  • Acne vulgaris
  • Perianal dermatitis
  • Primary cutaneous viral infections (e.g., herpes simplex, chickenpox)
  • Hypersensitivity to any of its ingredients
  • Perianal and genital pruritus
  • Dermatoses in infants under three months of age, including dermatitis and napkin eruptions

Precautions & Warnings:

Prolonged application of high doses to large areas of the body, especially in infants and children, may lead to adrenal suppression. Atrophic changes in the skin, such as thinning, striae, and dilatation of superficial blood vessels, may occur with prolonged use. Avoid contact with the eyes, and use appropriate antimicrobial therapy when treating inflamed lesions that have been infected. Topical corticosteroids should be withdrawn if there is a spread of infection.

Pregnancy and Lactation:

Consider administration during pregnancy only if the expected risk to the mother outweighs any potential risk to the fetus. No investigation has been conducted on the excretion into human breast milk.

Adverse Effects:

Possible adverse effects of Onvate Lotion/Cream include local burning and pruritus. Prolonged use may cause atrophic changes in the skin, hypertrichosis, and hypopigmentation. Hypercorticism may occur, especially in infants and children, and the use of corticosteroids has been reported to exacerbate signs and symptoms of dermatoses.

Drug Interaction:

There is no known drug interaction reported for Onvate.

Over-dosage:

Acute over-dosage is unlikely, but in the case of chronic overuse, features of hypercorticism may appear. Discontinue application in such cases.
