Fusiderm Cream, manufactured by Martin Dow, is a potent antibiotic cream containing Fusidic Acid 2% w/w. Notably, Staphylococci, even those resistant to penicillin and other antibiotics, are highly susceptible to fusidic acid. Fusidic acid, chemically known as (17Z)16β(Acetyloxy)3β,19dihydroxy4β,8,14trimethyl18nor5β,10αcholesta17(20),24dien21oic acid hemihydrate, is an antimicrobial compound produced through the cultivation of specific strains of Fusiderm coccineous

Composition:

Each gram of Fusiderm Cream contains:

Fusidic Acid (BP): 2% w/w

Therapeutic Indications:

Fusiderm Cream is indicated for the treatment of both primary and secondary skin infections caused by Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus spp, and Corynebacterium minutissimum. Primary skin infections encompass conditions like impetigo contagions and erythrismal, while secondary skin infections include infected wounds and burns

Clinical Pharmacology:

Fusidic acid, in addition to targeting Staphylococci, also demonstrates activity against other bacterial species such as various Corynebacterial spp, Neisseria spp, Clostridia spp, and Bacteroides spp

Mechanism of Action:

Fusidic acid acts by inhibiting protein synthesis, interfering with the transfer of amino acids from aminoacyl RNA to protein on the ribosomes

Pharmacokinetics:

Fusidic acid can permeate intact human skin, with the extent of penetration influenced by factors such as exposure duration and skin condition. It is primarily excreted in bile, with minimal excretion in urine

Dosage and Administration:

For uncovered lesions, apply a small amount of Fusidic acid cream 3 or 4 times daily. In the case of covered lesions, less frequent applications (1 or 2 times daily) may be appropriate

Contraindications:

Fusiderm Cream should not be used in cases of hypersensitivity to the active substance or any of its components

Warnings & Precautions:

• Prolonged or recurrent use may elevate the risk of antibiotic resistance and contact sensitization
• When applying the cream to the face, take care to avoid contact with the eyes, as some components may cause conjunctival irritation
• Use during pregnancy should be cautious and determined by assessing the benefit to the mother against potential risks to the developing baby

Overdosage:

Overdosing with Fusidic acid cream is unlikely

Adverse Effects:

Hypersensitivity reactions and angioedema may occur
